The National Identification and Registration Authority (NIRA) has apprehended two suspected fraudsters who were impersonating staff at the Kampala Central Division office during the ongoing mass enrolment and mass renewal exercise.

According to officials, the suspects posed as Registration Assistants and approached applicants, promising expedited processing and quick collection of national identity cards in exchange for money.

Alert members of the public became suspicious of the individuals and reported the matter to NIRA officials at the centre. Following the tip-off, officers discreetly monitored the suspects before moving in to arrest them.

The two were apprehended while attempting to leave the premises after realizing they had been exposed.

NIRA has reiterated that all services related to mass enrolment and mass renewal are entirely free of charge. The Authority emphasized that it does not operate through middlemen and does not offer fast-tracking services.

Members of the public have been urged to remain vigilant and immediately report any individuals soliciting money in the name of NIRA.

The Authority warned that anyone found impersonating its staff or engaging in fraudulent activities will be dealt with in accordance with the law.
