Something is shifting in East Africa, and it is not by coincidence. From the streets of Nairobi to the tense nights in Dar es Salaam, and now attempts to spark similar fires in Kampala, the pattern is too clear to ignore. The so-called “Gen Z protests” are not just spontaneous outbursts of youth frustration. They are part of a growing regional script  coordinated narratives, recycled slogans, online mobilisation playbooks, and shadowy actors who benefit from a destabilised East Africa.

Yes, young people have genuine grievances: high costs of living, contested elections, unemployment, and restricted civic spaces. No one disputes that. But behind the raw frustration sits a much bigger, strategic hand pulling strings, igniting tempers, and exporting chaos across borders.

The Disrupters of Peace: Who Are They?

  • External Networks Funding and Fueling Youth Mobilisation: Cell-based groups using encrypted messaging apps are not operating in a vacuum. They mirror patterns seen in other regions where foreign opportunists weaponise youth anger to weaken states. The coordinated hashtags, identical protest models, and simultaneous mobilisation across Tanzania, Kenya, and attempted spill-overs into Uganda suggest influence beyond mere “activism”.

  • Regional Political Actors Using Youth Movements as Pawns: The Nairobi 2022 “Uganda Human Rights Accountability Conference” is a perfect case study. Instead of principled advocacy, the event became a stage for political players to parade alleged victims many later found to have injuries from boda accidents, machinery incidents, or unrelated events — all for dramatic effect. Even seasoned opposition figures like Col.(rtd) Kizza Besigye and Maj. Gen.(rtd) Mugisha Muntu publicly condemned the deception and exploitation. When respected figures warn that activism is being turned into a business of chaos and donor theatre, citizens should pay attention.
  • The Chaos Exporters: Some actors thrive when streets burn: they gain online traction, attract donor sympathy, and paint their countries as ungovernable. The worst part is that those who die in riots are forgotten within months; their families mourn alone, while organisers move on to the next city and the next microphone.
  • Opportunistic Fringe Activists: A new crop of “career activists” is emerging travelling from country to country, giving fiery speeches, urging riots, and disappearing when things go bad. They hide behind buzzwords like “democracy”, yet their methods destroy livelihoods, tourism, trade, and national stability.

Tanzania is already counting the cost: cancelled tourist bookings, a burnt bus terminal, and a dented national image. Who paid that price? Ordinary Tanzanians not the organisers.

East Africa is a young region, energetic, ambitious, and connected. But that youthful energy is being hijacked. Chaos is becoming a regional export, smuggled across borders by groups who believe burning tyres is a path to liberation.

But we must ask:

  • Who benefits when East African capitals burn?
  • Who gains when economies collapse?
  • Whose agenda is strengthened when citizens lose trust in their institutions?

Certainly not the ordinary mother in Mbale, the boda rider in Arua, or the student in Mbarara.

Uganda has every right and responsibility  to shield its people from imported chaos. No country should allow foreign organisers or regional activists to sneak in and stage disturbances under the guise of “solidarity”. The Constitution is clear: demonstrations must be lawful, peaceful, and non-violent. Anything else is criminality.

Recent security responses have shown that Uganda does not gamble with peace. The region has already seen what happens when states hesitate.

During the “Gen Z” protests in Nairobi, a lot of properties including the building housing Uganda’s Embassy in Nairobi were destroyed.

It is time for citizens especially the youth to wake up.

  • Do not be used.
  • Do not let outsiders gamble with your future.
  • Do not allow your land to become a testing ground for political theatre.
  • Demand accountability, yes but reject manipulation.

Our region has fought too hard for stability to allow reckless networks, failed politicians, or foreign opportunists to turn it into a playground of anarchy.

  • Peace is not weakness.
  • Stability is not oppression.
  • And protecting your homeland is not negotiable.

East Africa must refuse to become a region where chaos travels faster than ideas. The time to guard our nations is now.
