Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) serving under the African Union Support Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM) have killed a senior Al-Shabaab commander in the Lower Shabelle region.
The militant leader, identified as Osman Hussein Bune Amiir, was widely regarded as the group’s general commander in Lower Shabelle. He was killed on September 14, 2025, in an ambush conducted by UPDF troops near Buulomareer.

Sector One Commander Brig Gen Joseph Musoke Ssemwanga commended the soldiers of Buulo Mareer Forward Operating Base for their effort, describing the operation as “a decisive blow against Al-Shabaab.”

Recovered items included a pistol with three loaded magazines, binoculars, a porch, and two mobile phones.
Brig Gen Ssemwanga assured the troops that AUSSOM leadership, UPDF command, and international partners remain committed to dismantling terrorist networks and restoring stability in Somalia.

Maj David Ogweng, commander of Buulo Mareer FOB, attributed the successful operation to consistent guidance from his superiors and pledged that his forces will continue to ensure peace and security in the region.
During his visit, Brig Gen Ssemwanga also inspected Forward Operating Bases in Quoryoley and Goloweyn to review operational readiness and troop welfare.
He was accompanied by Lt Col Justus Magyembe, Contingent Logistics and Engineering Commander, as well as commanders for Explosive Ordnance Disposal and Women’s Affairs.
