MTN Uganda has announced the appointment of Sylvia ElSheikh as its new Chief Marketing Officer, effective July 14, 2025. She takes over from Somdev Sen, who has served the company with distinction and now transitions to a new role within the MTN Group.
Sylvia ElSheikh returns to the MTN brand with over 18 years of experience in the telecommunications and commercial sectors. Her background includes significant achievements in marketing strategy, customer acquisition, product innovation, and digital transformation across African markets.
Before joining MTN Uganda, Elsheikh was Chief Marketing Officer at Airtel Zambia from 2022 to 2025. During her tenure, she played a pivotal role in cementing airtel’s market leadership, attaining a value share exceeding 60%. Under her leadership, Airtel Zambia PLC launched the country’s largest 5G network and LTE TDD infrastructure, alongside the successful introduction of VoLTE services—moves that firmly established airtel as a technology leader in the Zambian market.
Earlier in her career, Elsheikh held several senior leadership roles within MTN Sudan. From 2016 to 2022, she served as Chief Marketing Officer, having previously led key portfolios including Segment Pricing & Acquisition and Value-Added Services. Her career in telecom began with technical and VAS roles at Sudani Telecom and Canar Telecom in Sudan, where she developed strong expertise in core network planning and digital services.
Speaking on her appointment, Elsheikh expressed enthusiasm about returning to MTN, saying, “I am thrilled to return to the MTN family and excited to join MTN Uganda, a brand that stands tall for innovation, inclusion, and impact. Sylvia ElSheikh holds a Master of Science in Business Administration with a specialization in Marketing Management, along with a Bachelor of Science (Honors) in Electrical and Electronics Engineering. Her rare blend of technical and commercial expertise positions her ideally to lead MTN Uganda’s marketing efforts in an increasingly digital, data-driven landscape.
