Lt Gen Henry Tumukunde, the former minister of Security, has revealed that he visited Dr Kizza Besigye in Luzira Prison and urged him to talk to President Museveni if he wants to secure his freedom.
Speaking to the media after picking his nomination forms at the NRM headquaters along Kyadondo Road, Tumukunde said: “I have talked with Besigye, and I advised him to compromise and hold talks with President Museveni in order to regain his freedom.”
He did not reveal when he visited the former FDC leader or how Besigye responded.
But he insisted Besigye could only secure his release by initiating dialogue with the government.
“This will subsequently make him a free man and allow him to enjoy his freedom again,” Tumukunde emphasized.
Besigye, a four-time presidential candidate and vocal critic of Museveni, was arrested and charged with treason and conspiracy, allegations often leveled against opposition leaders in Uganda. His detention at Luzira Maximum Security Prison has sparked widespread debate, with supporters claiming the charges are politically motivated to silence dissent ahead of the 2026 elections.
Like Tumkunde, Besigye hails from Rukungiri, a district known for producing influential political figures.
Commenting on his political ambitions, Tumukunde appealed to the people of Rukungiri Municipality to consider him as their representative.
“You will be very lucky to have me. I will work on your issues,” he promised, highlighting his commitment to addressing local concerns.
He expressed gratitude for the opportunity to reconnect with past colleagues from the cabinet and parliament.
