Government Chief Whip and Ajuri County MP Hamson Obua has applauded the massive turnout witnessed during the National Resistance Movement (NRM) expression of interest exercise for parliamentary positions, describing it as a reflection of the party’s national strength and grassroots appeal.
Speaking to journalists at the NRM Secretariat in Kyadondo on day two of the exercise, Obua emphasized that the high participation levels underscored the ruling party’s widespread support across the country.
“The turnout for this exercise demonstrates the national prowess and political popularity of the NRM,” Obua said. “You can see that every part of Uganda is represented in big numbers. On day one, over 700 people turned up.”
Obua described the NRM as a “mass party” that embraces a broad demographic.
“NRM is a multi-layered party comprising the young, the middle-aged, and the senior citizens,” he noted.
He further pointed out that the ongoing exercise affirms the party’s commitment to democratic principles.
“It also demonstrates the fact that the NRM walks the talk in terms of implementing the democratic principles enshrined both in the national constitution and the constitution of the NRM.”
According to the party’s electoral roadmap, the expression of interest period for MPs, municipality and city division mayors, and LCV councillors runs from June 2 to 15, followed by nominations from June 17 to 30.
