The National Unity Platform (NUP) party leader, Hon. Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu, yesterday chaired the National Executive Committee and Executive Board meetings of the party, during which critical decisions were made to shape the party’s preparations ahead of the 2026 general elections.

During the meetings, the party constituted a new Election Management Committee, approved electoral guidelines, and adopted a comprehensive roadmap toward the 2026 polls. Ms. Chemtai Harriet, who has been serving as the NUP Coordinator for the Sebei Sub-region based in Kapchorwa, was appointed as the new Chairperson of the Election Management Committee. She will be deputized by Dr. Ivan Ssempijja, a former Guild President of Makerere University.

Kyagulanyi congratulated the newly appointed committee and pledged the party’s full support as they take on the vital responsibility of steering NUP’s electoral preparations.

“We are confident that this team will deliver on its mandate with dedication and integrity. We assure them of our full backing as they begin their critical work,” Kyagulanyi stated.

In addition to election preparations, the meetings reviewed the status of various ongoing party activities across the country.

However, the NUP leader expressed concern over continued interference by state authorities, which he said has disrupted several scheduled activities, including the establishment and training of Mobilisation Committees in districts and the effective planning of upcoming youth elections.

Kyagulanyi accused the government of using illegal blockades to frustrate the party’s operations and vowed to resist all forms of repression.

“We resolved to take the regime head-on in every way possible to ensure that our rights and freedoms are protected. We shall not be intimidated,” he asserted.

Later in the day, Kyagulanyi addressed the nation, highlighting the escalating human rights violations in Uganda.

He condemned the continued suppression of political activities and urged Ugandans to remain resilient in the struggle for justice and democracy.

The NUP’s renewed commitment comes at a critical time as political parties gear up for the 2026 general elections. With a new Election Management Committee in place and a roadmap approved, NUP appears poised to intensify its grassroots mobilisation and prepare for what promises to be a highly competitive political season.
