Police in Wakiso District successfully foiled an attempted robbery at the Diamond Trust Bank branch on Sunday, April 27, 2025. Authorities reported that the suspects were two security guards employed by GKO Security Limited, who had been assigned to the bank.
According to ASP Luke Owoyesigyire, the deputy public relations officer for Kampala Metropolitan Police (KMP), police responded to a distress call at the bank and quickly arrived at the scene. Upon entering the premises, officers discovered the two guards hiding in the ceiling. When ordered to surrender, the suspects reportedly drew their rifles, prompting police to open fire.
One of the guards, Okawa Emmanuel, was shot and later confirmed dead from his injuries. The second guard, Okelo Justin, surrendered to the authorities without further resistance and was promptly arrested.
Preliminary investigations have revealed that the suspects’ motive for the robbery attempt was linked to a reported grievance over the non-payment of their salaries for the past three months. Police are continuing to investigate the incident to confirm further details and to determine whether there were any other individuals involved.
Owoyesigyire confirmed that one suspect remains in custody, and authorities are working to establish the full circumstances surrounding the robbery attempt.
The incident has raised concerns about the conduct of security personnel and their ability to handle financial institutions’ security effectively. Further updates will be provided as investigations progress.
