The Uganda Police Force has halted scheduled training meetings for regional mobilization teams organized by the National Unity Platform (NUP), citing non-compliance with previously outlined guidelines and public safety concerns following an incident in Mbale.
In a letter dated April 16, 2025, addressed to NUP Secretary General David Lewis Rubongoya, the police referenced an April 14 party event in Mbale, alleging that NUP supporters disregarded traffic laws and caused a total blockage at Iganga Town, thereby endangering public safety.
The Inspector General of Police, through his representative Okoshi Simon Peter, stated that NUP had repeatedly ignored guidelines regarding the conduct of mobilization activities, despite several prior warnings.
As a result, police have suspended the party’s scheduled training sessions in Bushenyi on April 17 at Ankole Resort and in Gulu on April 24 at Palm Garden Restaurant and Guest House until further notice.
Responding via his X (formerly Twitter) handle, NUP Leader Robert Kyagulanyi condemned the move as politically motivated and discriminatory.
He noted that while NUP activities are being blocked, the President and members of the ruling party continue to hold rallies and processions across the country without hindrance.
“Following our very successful leaders’ convention in Mbale, the partisan police have yet again blocked our engagements in Western and Northern Uganda,” Kyagulanyi posted.
“The regime is doing all this out of panic and fear. We shall continue to mobilize, organize, and agitate. Our struggle will end in victory”
