The Uganda Police Force has called for increased public vigilance and cooperation as the country enters the busy Easter holiday period, emphasizing the need for both personal safety and community responsibility.
Addressing the press, Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Kituuma Rusoke, the Uganda Police Force spokesperson, outlined a series of safety advisories and enforcement priorities the police will focus on during the holiday.
“As Uganda Police Force, we strongly urge Ugandans to maintain heightened vigilance and awareness,” he stated. “The Easter season is a time of celebration, but it’s also a time when safety risks increase.”
ACP Rusoke identified key areas that pose security concerns during the festivities. These include markets, transport terminals, places of worship, entertainment venues such as disco clubs, beaches, and event grounds where large crowds are expected.
“All of these places need to have security and safety measures in place,” he said, urging event organizers to liaise with security teams. “We have robust security arrangements at district and regional levels, working in coordination with inter-agency teams to ensure public safety.”
He further cautioned households against neglect, particularly when leaving children unattended at home. “We are sending a message to homes, do not abandon your homes or leave children unattended. At times, we register fires. Remember, these are children who are tender and vulnerable,” Rusoke noted.
The Police spokesperson also issued a stern warning to motorists, especially those who engage in drinking and driving.
“Motorists, please avoid such tendencies. On one side, we caution you. On the other, we warn you that the long arm of the law shall work against you if we find you behind the wheel under the influence of alcohol,” he said.
The Police have reassured the public that all security organs are on high alert and are prepared to respond to any threats or incidents during the Easter holiday period.
“These warnings are not to dampen the festive spirit, but to ensure every Ugandan returns home safely,” ACP Rusoke concluded.
