The number of fatalities in the devastating road accident at Mayanja Valley, along the Kampala-Bombo Road, has increased to seven, with 19 injured casualties receiving treatment, according to police reports.
The accident, which occurred on the evening of March 5, 2025, involved a Fuso Super Grande truck (Reg. UBK 769A) that lost control while descending the valley, crashing into nine vehicles and a motorcycle. The truck, traveling from Kampala to Bombo, crashed into several vehicles moving in the same direction, leading to the fatal accident.
The crash involved nine motor vehicles (UBQ 745N T/Noah, UAY 704B T/Hiace, UAT 652K T/Hiace, UBK 769 A Fuso Super Grande, UBD 829G T/Hiace, UAL 333C T/Corolla, UAV 026F T/Hiace, UBQ 062B T/Sienta, UBD 483N T/Hiace) & one motorcycle (UES 773K Yamaha).
The deceased have since been identified as: Musa Kawesa, Asima Sanyu, Eric Bazale, Christine Nyamutoka (57).Three others, two men and one woman, are yet to be identified. The injured, most of whom were passengers in Toyota Hiace taxis, remain admitted to Mulago Hospital for treatment. The deceased include five occupants from the affected vehicles and one motorcycle rider.
Traffic Police spokesman Micheal Kananura says police have launched an investigation and have towed the wrecked vehicles to Kawempe Police Station for further examination. They attribute the accident to loss of control by the truck driver, but locals insist the road’s condition has contributed to multiple fatal accidents in the past.
Eyewitnesses and residents are now calling for urgent road safety interventions, including speed humps, improved signage, and stricter regulation of heavy trucks in the area.
Authorities have urged motorists to exercise caution on the road and adhere to speed limits. Meanwhile, police say they are working to identify the remaining victims and notify their families.
