The Prime Minister of Uganda, Rt. Hon. Nabbanja Robinah, has tasked the Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) to draft and process a law aimed at helping the country manage garbage effectively, starting from the household level.
Nabbanja made the directive today while meeting a delegation from the United Arab Emirates at her office in Kampala. The meeting served as a follow-up to her recent working visit to Dubai.
The delegation was led by Dr. Puneet Sarna, the Senior Director of Operations at Beeah Group, a company responsible for waste management in the state of Sharjah.
Uganda has been struggling with the challenge of garbage management across all the 10 cities in the country, mainly due to the organic nature of most of the waste generated.
Nabbanja revealed that during her recent working visit to Limin in Italy, she observed that households are mandated to sort their waste, and failure to comply attracts serious fines.
The Executive Director of KCCA, Hajjat Sharifah Buzeki, noted that engagements held so far indicate that the waste management challenge will soon be effectively addressed.
