High Court Judge Singiza Douglas has deferred the ruling on the release of vocal city lawyer Eron Kiiza.
Kiiza had appeared in court on Tuesday, expecting a ruling on his habeas corpus case, only to be disappointed when the judge initially stated that the day was not set for the ruling. However, the judge later allowed the defense to make their submissions.
Kiiza, a prominent human rights attorney was condemned to nine months in prison for contempt of the court martial, his legal team gathered at the Civil Division of the High Court today, awaiting the ruling on his release.
Today, Judge Singiza met with two of Kiiza’s legal representatives George Musisi and Kato Tumusiime, informing them that the ruling would be delivered similarly to the recent habeas corpus ruling for Dr. Kizza Besigye, which was sent by email.
“I will deliver the ruling by email or on your WhatsApp groups,” Justice Singiza reportedly told the lawyers, referencing the Besigye ruling, which was dismissed on the grounds that the application had been overtaken by events.
Kiiza’s legal team has argued that continued imprisonment is unlawful, demanding clarification on the legal grounds of his detention.
