The Deputy Secretary General of the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM), Rt Hon. Rose Namayanja Nsereko, has urged parents to focus on equipping their children with practical skills.
Speaking at a service at St. John’s Nakanyonyi Church of Uganda on February 9, Namayanja emphasized the importance of skills development for the youth. She explained that empowering young people with hands-on skills would enable them to become job creators rather than job seekers, a priority championed by the NRM government.
Namayanja pointed out that the government’s focus on youth skills development aims to build a future with more entrepreneurs and fewer job seekers. She stressed that what young people do during their youth plays a significant role in shaping their future.
“What the youths do during their youthful age will determine what they will become in the next years,” she said.
The Deputy Secretary General also shared her belief that many successful individuals owe their achievements to the kindness and support of others. She compared this to marriage, where a woman may work tirelessly without recognition from her husband but should not give up, as God will reward her efforts in due time.
Namayanja urged schoolchildren to prioritize their education over distractions, such as football. While admitting her support for Arsenal, she reminded students that focusing on their studies was more important, especially with exams approaching.
“Focus on your books, not football clubs,” she said.
She also reminded students that their education benefits them first and foremost, not their parents.
“You are the first beneficiary of your education while one may not have control over their family’s financial situation, they can control their future by working hard and achieving their goals.” she stated
Namayanja urged students to dream big, assuring them that education is the key to success.
In addition to her message, Namayanja made a contribution of 5 million shillings towards the Fathers and Mothers’ Union at St. John’s Nakanyonyi Church.
Eunice Nsubuga, the Chairperson of the Mothers Union, spoke about the union’s efforts to address the challenges facing the youth in their community. She noted a concerning rise in drug use and other destructive behaviors among young people.
“Many youths here have started taking drugs, and this isn’t something we want as parents,” Nsubuga said.
The union plans to empower the youth by providing vocational training and partnering with government entities to implement sustainable solutions.
