The Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) has officially endorsed Mukiibi Sadat, popularly known as Kalifa Aganaga, as its candidate for the Kawempe North parliamentary by-election.
Speaking at the party headquarters in Najjanankumbi, FDC President Eng. Patrick Oboi Amuriat stated that after evaluating potential candidates, the party determined that Aganaga had a competitive advantage over other contenders and was best suited to carry the party’s flag.
“We have spoken to our brother Aganaga, and we have learned that beneath his dreadlocks, there is a competent leader and a great individual,” Amuriat said. He further joked that he had once considered growing dreadlocks himself, drawing laughter from the audience.
In his remarks, Aganaga emphasized his deep connection to Kawempe, stating that he understands the challenges faced by residents and is committed to addressing their needs.
“I am a native of Kawempe, and I know the conditions of the people here. I want to represent and serve them well in Parliament,” Aganaga stated.
FDC’s Deputy President for Western Uganda, Robert Centenary, defended the party’s decision, citing Aganaga’s educational background, conduct, and ability to inspire young people. He compared Aganaga’s political journey to that of the late Muhammad Ssegirinya, noting that while Ssegirinya initially faced skepticism, he ultimately proved to be an effective leader.
“The few hours I spent with Mukiibi Sadat impressed me. His qualifications and leadership potential make him a strong candidate. Sometimes, people are judged at face value, but I believe he will resonate with the youth,” Centenary remarked.
The National Electoral Commission (NEC) has set March 13, 2025, as the date for the Kawempe North by-election.
Other political parties are in the process of selecting their flag bearers. The National Resistance Movement (NRM) has confirmed Hajjati Nambi Farida as its candidate, while the National Unity Platform (NUP) has received 10 aspirants and is expected to start the vetting process on Thursday February 06, 2025, to select one candidate.
The race for Kawempe North is expected to be highly competitive, with various candidates vying for the seat previously held by the late Muhammad Ssegirinya.
