His Highness the Aga Khan Dies at 88 years

His Highness Prince Karim al-Hussaini, Aga Khan IV, the 49th hereditary Imam of the Shia Ismaili Muslims, passed away peacefully in Lisbon, Portugal, on February 4, 2025, at the age of 88, surrounded by his family.

Born on December 13, 1936, in Geneva, Switzerland, Prince Karim succeeded his grandfather, Aga Khan III, as the Imam in 1957 at the age of 20. He was a direct descendant of the Prophet Muhammad through his cousin and son-in-law, Ali.

Throughout his life, the Aga Khan was renowned for his philanthropic efforts, particularly through the Aga Khan Development Network (AKDN), which he founded. The AKDN focuses on initiatives in health care, education, and economic development across more than 30 countries, especially in Africa and Asia.
In addition to his humanitarian work, the Aga Khan was a prominent figure in the equestrian world, owning several successful racehorses, including the legendary Shergar.He is survived by his four children: Princess Zahra, Prince Rahim, Prince Hussain, and Prince Aly Muhammad, as well as his grandchildren. The announcement of his designated successor will follow after the reading of his will.
His Highness the Aga Khan IV, through the Aga Khan Development Network (AKDN), has established a significant presence in Uganda across various sectors, profoundly impacting the nation’s development.
The AKDN has been instrumental in enhancing Uganda’s energy infrastructure. Notably, the Bujagali Hydropower Plant, developed in partnership with the government and other stakeholders, supplies approximately 33% of the country’s electricity, bolstering both industrial and domestic power needs.
Through entities like Diamond Trust Bank and Jubilee Insurance, the AKDN has strengthened Uganda’s financial sector, providing essential banking and insurance services that support both individuals and businesses.

The Aga Khan Foundation has implemented early childhood education programs benefiting over 65,000 children in Uganda. These initiatives focus on improving school readiness and overall educational outcomes.

The Aga Khan University is expanding its presence in Uganda with the construction of a new campus in Kampala. This development includes a University Centre, student housing, and the Aga Khan University Hospital, aiming to enhance medical education and healthcare services in the region.

The AKDN operates the Kampala Serena Hotel and Lake Victoria Serena Golf Resort & Spa, which have elevated the standards of hospitality in Uganda, attracting tourists and providing employment opportunities.

The Nation Media Group, under the AKDN, owns prominent outlets such as the Daily Monitor newspaper and NTV Uganda.
