Uganda and Kenya have deepened their defence collaboration to promote regional security, with a key meeting held at Mbale Resort Hotel in Eastern Uganda. The Joint Defence Committee (JDC 5) convened from 13-15 January 2025, further cementing the two countries’ military partnership.
This meeting follows the JDC 4 in Nairobi, held in May 2024, which focused on addressing pressing regional security issues.
Major General Don Nabasa, head of Uganda’s Joint Staff Policy and Strategy, highlighted the importance of strengthening joint military efforts in advancing bilateral relations.
“This meeting marks another milestone in the strong relations between Uganda and Kenya,” Maj Gen Nabasa stated.
“It showcases the excellent cooperation between our armies, and we are confident that the decisions made will guide our strategic priorities.” he added
Maj Gen Nabasa expressed gratitude for Kenya’s commitment to fully implementing agreements, particularly in areas such as intelligence sharing and tackling shared security threats. He also commended the Kenyan Defence Forces (KDF) for their proactive role in addressing livestock rustling and related crimes in Turkana and West Pokot counties.
Brig Samuel Kimani, Chief of Strategic Plans and Policy at Kenya Defence Headquarters emphasized the significance of military cooperation under the Defence Cooperation Agreement (DCA), which tackles common challenges such as cybercrime and terrorism.
“We are pleased to collaborate in advancing our shared security agenda to effectively respond to emerging threats,” Brig Kimani remarked.
He acknowledged Ugandan President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni for his leadership in fostering military collaboration, including joint training , exchange programs and peacekeeping efforts in the region.
Brigadier Wilberforce Sserunkuma, Commander of Uganda’s 3rd Infantry Division, reaffirmed Uganda’s commitment to disarmament, maritime security on Lake Victoria and combating cross-border crime.
The discussions at the meeting covered a range of thematic aspects including bilateral relations, disarmament operations, countering violent extremism, joint operations, training, and maritime security.
The outcomes are expected to enhance security and promote long-term stability in both countries.
The Kenyan delegation included Brigadier Samuel Kimani, Colonel Patrick Nkaduda, Colonel Orwa Odhiambo, Lieutenant Colonel Elim Stephen Lobokot, Major Kenneth Kanyi Mwangi, and Major Anderson Olero Okumu.
Uganda’s team was led by Major General Don Nabasa, Brigadier Wilberforce Sserunkuma, Brigadier Michael Nyarwa, Lieutenant Colonel Fred Wemba, Lieutenant Colonel Jean Rukira, and Major Gideon Makanzu.
