A devastating fire engulfed the second floor of Nyumba Kubwa Plaza, leaving traders counting massive losses.

The inferno destroyed property worth millions, with several shop owners left in shock as their businesses went up in flames.

Traders, recounted the ordeal, saying their shops stocked with merchandise like paint and electronics among others were completely reduced to ashes.

The cause of the fire remains unclear, with conflicting accounts emerging from witnesses and traders. Some blamed the incident on individuals cosmetics, while others pointed fingers at a gas cylinder store. Speculation also swirled around a restaurant on the same floor, which some suspected could have triggered the blaze, while others cited an electric spark from color mixing activities.

Central Division Mayor Salim Uhuru has vowed to enforce fire safety regulations this year, following council resolution.

“We will ensure building owners install fire extinguishers to protect property and lives. We also commend the security teams for their swift action in containing the situation and preventing theft during the chaos,” Uhuru said.
