Speaker of Parliament Anita Among and her Deputy Speaker Thomas Tayebwa on Wednesday flagged off Members of Parliament to represent Uganda at the 14th East African Community (EAC) Inter-Parliamentary Games in Mombasa, Kenya.

The games, running from December 6 to December 18, 2024, aim to foster unity, camaraderie, and cooperation among lawmakers from EAC member states, including Uganda, Kenya, Tanzania, Rwanda, South Sudan, and Burundi, alongside the East African Legislative Assembly (EALA).

State Minister for Sports, Hon. Ogwang Ogwang, praised Parliament for its overwhelming support toward sports development in Uganda.

Speaking ahead of the East African Community (EAC) Inter-Parliamentary Games in Mombasa, Ogwang highlighted the positive impact of Parliament’s commitment, noting that the increasing number of trophies coming from various regions of the country is a direct result of their continued involvement.

Ogwang emphasized that the four key goals for the upcoming games include returning with trophies, with a personal pledge to be a top scorer, citing his excellent physical condition. He expressed confidence in Uganda’s performance, citing the nation’s history of success in the games.

“No wonder trophies are coming in from various parts of the country are all a commitment of the parliament supporting sports involvement in the country. I pledge to being a top scorer, as I am in peak physical condition,” he said

Chairperson of the Parliamentary Sports Club, Hon. Asuman Basalirwa, echoed Ogwang’s sentiments, assuring the public that Team Uganda is well-prepared to defend its title at the upcoming games. Basalirwa highlighted the team’s four-month training regimen and expressed determination to bring home more victories.

“Last year, Team Uganda emerged as the overall champions at the EAC Inter-Parliamentary Games, securing the most medals across all disciplines. In particular, athletics led the charge, with the Deputy Speaker of Parliament also earning recognition as the best golfer of the tournament.” He said

With strong support from Parliament and solid preparation, Team Uganda aims to continue its winning streak in Mombasa.

Participants will compete in various sports, including soccer, athletics, volleyball, tug-of-war, darts for persons with disabilities, and golf. The games also provide an opportunity to strengthen regional ties and promote integration through sportsmanship.

Mombasa County and the Kenyan government have upgraded facilities for the event and are leveraging the games to promote the city as a prime tourist destination, showcasing its hospitality and culture. Security arrangements have been collaboratively handled to ensure a smooth event.
