The Prime Minister of Uganda, Rt Hon. Robinah Nabbanja, has rushed to Bulambuli District to conduct an on-spot assessment of the devastating landslide and to console the families of the deceased.
Accompanied by the State Minister for Disaster Preparedness, Relief, and Refugees, Hon. Lillian Aber, the Prime Minister was received by local leaders and community elders upon her arrival.
The purpose of the visit is to evaluate the extent of the tragedy caused by the landslide, which claimed several lives, left many missing, and caused widespread destruction.
The Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF), Police, and other security agencies, with the help of local communities, have intensified rescue operations in the affected areas. However, their efforts are being hampered by impassable roads caused by the ongoing heavy rains.
The landslide, triggered by torrential rains on Wednesday, buried multiple homes and destroyed crops, leaving the communities in Masugu Town Council and Kimamolo Village, located in Buluganya Sub-County, in shock and distress.
The Office of the Prime Minister (OPM), the Uganda Red Cross Society, and other emergency agencies are working tirelessly to provide aid and support to the affected families. Rescue teams continue to comb through the debris in search of survivors and bodies of the missing, despite the challenging conditions.
This tragedy highlights the vulnerability of communities living in mountainous areas to natural disasters, particularly during the rainy season.
The government and humanitarian agencies are collaborating to address the immediate needs of the victims while assessing long-term solutions to mitigate the risks of such disasters in the future.
