President Museveni Promotes Four-Acre Model in Bukedi
President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has assured residents of Bukedi Subregion of the Ugandan government’s commitment to advancing the Parish Development Model (PDM) to support economic growth.
Speaking on Sunday, November 10, 2024, at a rally held at Kamuge Playground in Pallisa District, Museveni highlighted the PDM’s role in helping Ugandans transition from subsistence to the money economy. The rally was part of the President’s ongoing performance assessment tour, focusing on PDM and wealth creation efforts in Bukedi.
During his address, Museveni urged Bukedi residents to embrace commercial agriculture to boost their livelihoods. He recommended the “four-acre model,” advising farmers to dedicate an acre each for coffee, fruits, dairy pasture, and food crops, while utilizing backyard spaces for poultry, piggery, and fish farming. Museveni also encouraged the integration of additional crops like cocoa and palm oil to increase income.
The President also voiced concerns about high dropout rates in Bukedi, citing school fees as a barrier that leads 82% of children to leave school before completing Primary Seven. He emphasized his commitment to free education, instructing government schools not to charge vulnerable families.
Museveni further urged locals to avoid wetland encroachment, advising them to shift from rice farming in swamps to fish farming on wetland edges. He also highlighted government initiatives like NAADS, Operation Wealth Creation, Emyooga, and PDM, which aim to alleviate poverty, calling on local leaders to promote these programs.
“If you are rich, you can do your own development such as having solar power, water harvesting, paying school fees for your children in private schools and private hospitals.” he said
Prime Minister Robinah Nabbanja praised Museveni’s dedication to development, noting his contributions to improving livelihoods. NRM Vice Chairperson for Eastern Region, Capt. Mike Mukula, commended the President for maintaining peace and advancing Pan-Africanism.
The rally saw attendance from government ministers, MPs, local leaders, and cultural and religious figures, reflecting widespread support for the government’s poverty-alleviation initiatives as the President’s assessment tour continues across Bukedi Subregion.
