Four Teachers Held Over Fake PLE Exam Papers
Four teachers are expected to appear in court today on charges of unauthorized possession and online distribution of fake Primary Leaving Examination (PLE) papers.
According to a statement released by the Uganda National Examinations Board (UNEB), the arrested teachers are identified as Bakashaba Vincent from Kimongole Primary School in Isingiro, Muheki Vincent from Vision Primary School in Ibanda, Pabeku Albert from Stoneridge Primary School in Kira, and Oyet Hosea from Dignatory Junior School in Rukungiri. These educators are accused of disseminating counterfeit PLE papers through social media, allegedly charging up to 750,000 UGX per set of the forged documents.
Jennifer Kalule-Musamba, the Principal Public Relations Officer at UNEB, highlighted that the suspects are scheduled to face court on Tuesday, November 5, 2024. Citing Section 25 of the UNEB Act, CAP 259, she underscored the legal ramifications for anyone caught with, or attempting to distribute, fake examination materials. Offenders, upon conviction, may face a fine of up to 20 million UGX or a prison term of up to five years.
Kalule further emphasized that UNEB is committed to ensuring security and integrity in the examination process, aligning with this year’s theme, “Embracing security and holistic assessment of learners in a dynamic environment.”
The arrests come just hours before the official start of the PLE examinations, scheduled for Wednesday, November 6, 2024.
The Uganda Primary Leaving Examinations (PLE) for 2024 are set to commence on Wednesday, November 6, following a candidate briefing on Monday, November 4.
This year, the number of registered PLE candidates has risen to 798,763, up from 749,371 in 2023. This is part of an overall increase in the total candidates registered for Uganda’s national exams across all levels (PLE, UCE, and UACE), reaching 1,320,400 candidates, which represents a 7.8% increase from the previous year.
Additionally, UNEB has reminded school administrators and the public to be vigilant against fraud related to exam papers. All materials, including electronic versions, are tightly regulated under the law, with penalties for unauthorized possession or dissemination of exam content
