Nine Arrested Over Theft and Assault at Twins Ceremony in Jinja

In an unusual incident, police in Jinja District arrested nine suspects accused of violently raiding a traditional twins ceremony and stealing food, valuables, and other items from the celebration.

The ceremony, held at the home of 68-year-old Abdul Kimbunga in Bubugo Central, Butagaya Sub-county, was organized to honor his son Ashiraf Kyevuna’s one-year-old twins as part of cultural rites.

The event, scheduled for the night of November 3, 2024, turned chaotic when, at around 2 a.m., a group of armed individuals allegedly attacked Kimbunga’s home, brandishing pangas, hoes, and sticks. The attackers reportedly broke into the kitchen, consumed the pilau rice, chicken, and other traditional dishes prepared for the guests, and smeared themselves with ceremonial herbs intended for the twins.

Kira Regional Police spokesperson SP James Mubi says the intruders are also accused of vandalizing property and stealing various items, including chairs, tents, cups, plates, firewood, water, matooke, cassava, and clothes. Two guests, Sadat Lyagoba Mugoya and Farouk Isabirye, suffered severe head injuries during the attack, and other guests reported stolen belongings, such as bags and mobile phones.

He states that upon receiving the distress call, CPS Buwenge, led by the DPC SP Oyee Morris, swiftly mobilized regional police, setting up roadblocks at key locations. The coordinated response resulted in the capture of all nine suspects, and police recovered several stolen items, including plates, chicken, firewood, pangas, and phones.

Mubi identifies suspects as Fazal Makoma (23), Ziyad Bukenya (22), Nicholas Kasozi (19), Zefania Muwanguzi (18), Charles Magemeso (18), Sharif Muyingo (18), Hussein Tenywa (18), and Salim Gulinkaba (17), are all residents of Bubugo Central. They now face charges of criminal trespass, malicious damage, theft, and assault, and are currently detained at CPS Buwenge.

He condemned the incident, urging the public to refrain from such criminal acts and to adopt positive government programs like the Parish Development Model (PDM), Universal Primary Education (UPE), and Universal Secondary Education (USE) to uplift communities and reduce poverty.
