Military Court Condemns SFC Officer to Death for Mayuge Family Murders

A Special Forces Command (SFC) soldier, Pt. Herbertson Birivumbuka, has been sentenced to death for the murder of five family members in Mayuge District.

The sentencing, handed down by Lt. Col. Moses Nabasa, came after Birivumbuka admitted to the killings, which reportedly arose from a land dispute. Court records detail that Birivumbuka shot five relatives in the home of Isaac Isabirye Mudhasi, the head of the household involved in the land row.

Lt. Col. Nabasa said the sentence imposed on Birivumbuka would prevent other officers from re-engaging in such acts of misuse of firearms.

The tragic incident took place in June, with Birivumbuka allegedly targeting relatives he found in the house of Isaac Isabirye Mudhasi, a family member involved in the dispute.

Details revealed that Birivumbuka shot and killed Mudhasi along with three of his children and another relative in Namatale Village. Several other family members sustained injuries during the attack and were rushed to nearby hospitals for treatment.

Local authorities stated that land-related violence has recently escalated in the region. Eyewitnesses recounted that Mudhasi had previously voiced concerns about threats to his life over the land wrangle, even approaching local leaders for protection.

The prosecution highlighted the severity of the crime, leading to the court’s decision to impose capital punishment as a message to other officers regarding firearm responsibility and discipline
