Death Toll in Kigogwa Fuel Tanker Explosion Rises to 31
Police authorities have updated the death toll from the fuel tanker explosion in Kigogwa along the Kampala-Bombo road to 31.
The tragic incident on October 22 began when a fuel tanker overturned after the driver lost control, sparking a scramble as people tried to siphon fuel from the wreckage. An explosion of flames instantly killed 11 persons on the scene as the flames quickly spread across nearby shops, homes, and motorcycles.
According to Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson Patrick Onyango, the latest victim succumbing to severe burns at Kiruddu Hospital in Kampala,.
“Today, November 1, 2024, the death toll from the Kigoogwa incident has reached 31,” Onyango confirmed. The victims include 22 men and nine women.
Preliminary investigations suggest a nearby charcoal stove may have triggered the fire that claimed dozens of lives and left the victims unrecognizable.
The government conducted DNA tests to identify the deceased, and the bodies have since been handed over to their families. Police are still hunting for the driver of the fuel truck who fled the scene moments after the incident.
