Truck Driver Flees After School Trip Accident Injures Over 60 Students
Police are searching for the driver of a truck who fled the scene after causing a serious accident involving students returning from a school trip.
The driver whose identity is yet to be disclosed fled the scene immediately after the accident and remains at large.
The incident left more than 60 students injured, several critically, after the truck flipped along the Mbale-Tirinyi route near Nabweyo Village in Budaka Town Council.
The truck, a blue Isuzu Elf with registration number UAS 317S, was transporting 70 students and five teachers from Ngoma Standard Secondary School in Budaka District. According to witnesses, the truck experienced brake failure while climbing a steep hill, causing it to roll backward and overturn.
Following the accident, some students were rushed to Budaka Health Centre IV for immediate treatment, while seven with severe injuries were transferred to Mbale Regional Referral Hospital for specialized care.
Police reports indicate that the truck was dangerously overloaded and in poor mechanical condition, making it unsafe for transporting such a large group. Authorities have reiterated warnings to the public about the dangers of using unfit vehicles to transport students.
Investigations are ongoing as police continue the search for the suspect. The condition of the injured students is still being monitored.
