Court Sentences Man to 25 Years for Pouring Acid on Colleague
The Buganda Road Court has convicted and sentenced to 25 years imprisonment for the attempted murder.
Presiding Chief Magistrate His Worship Kayizzi Ronald sentenced the accused identified as Taban Mawa on 18th September 2024.
Court heard that Mawa, on March 26, 2024, poured acid on his colleague Ivan Oyirwoth, accusing him of stealing a television set.
Oyirwoth who sustained acid burns on 90 percent of his body survived death narrowly, and has been hospitalized for several months. Mawa who pleaded guilty in court confessed that he lured Oyirwoth to an isolated place under the guise of offering a job, where he. caused extreme bodily harm on him, accusing him of theft.
His Worship Kayizzi, deemed the attack exceptionally heinous, revealing the need for a strong deterrent to prevent such acts in the future. Kayizzi said Mawa’s conduct demonstrated a flagrant disregard for human life and decency and given the severity of the crime,
The prosecution led by Senior State Attorney in the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions, Kyazze Ivan Evans a had initially sought the maximum penalty of life imprisonment, due to the heinous and calculated nature of the crime.
The offence carries a maximum penalty of life imprisonment, as the attack was premeditated and carried out with deliberate cruelty.
