Minister of Defence and Veteran Affairs, Markson Oboth, led the army’s tributes, describing Hon. Sarah Mateke Nyirabashitsi, the former Woman Representative for Kisoro District and Minister of State for Defence and Veteran Affairs (Defence), as a dedicated and committed public servant whose absence will be deeply felt across the Ministry and the UPDF.
He said this during funeral service and vigil held at parliament on Monday, in honor of the late Minister.
“Mateke distinguished herself as a committed servant, and as a Minister of State for Defence, she will be profoundly missed. Her leadership and dedication will continue to inspire us and guide us forward,” Oboth said.
He acknowledged the profound shock felt across the ministry, adding that Mateke’s sudden passing has left the entire Defence and Veteran Affairs community in deep sorrow.
“We take this opportunity to celebrate her life, a life marked by exemplary service, steadfast commitment, and a deep sense of duty to her nation,” Oboth added.
At the same occasion, Justice Christopher Gashirabake, a family member and Court of Appeal Judge, thanked Speaker Anita Among for her unwavering support throughout the difficult period following Mateke’s passing.
He expressed gratitude for the efforts made by Parliament and the Clerk’s office in facilitating the funeral arrangements both in Kampala and Kisoro. Gashirabake also took the moment to reflect on the nature of mortality, emphasizing that moments like these prompt deep personal reflection on the legacy individuals leave behind.
Speaker Anita Among, while eulogizing Mateke, encouraged Parliament to stand in solidarity with the young son she left behind, ensuring that Mateke’s legacy continues.
“We remember to pray for Sarah’s soul… we will keep Sarah in our hearts. She has left a young son who hasn’t finished school, and in Parliament, just like Liverpool’s motto, You’ll Never Walk Alone, we will ensure that he is supported. We will walk with him for the good and the legacy of his mother,” she said.
Among shared the emotional moment when she learned of Mateke’s death, initially dismissing it as a rumor until confirmation reached her directly from the hospital. “I thought it was fake news when I first heard it, but when I reached Mengo Hospital, it was indeed a reality,” she said, reflecting on the suddenness of the loss.
Prime Minister Robinah Nabbanja also spoke emotionally about her personal relationship with Mateke, describing her not just as a colleague but as a close friend. Nabbanja said Mateke’s death had left a significant void in the Government and within the Kisoro community.
“This untimely demise has left a significant void in Government, her community in Kisoro, and in the hearts of many who knew and worked closely with her,” Nabbanja remarked.
She highlighted Mateke’s exceptional work, particularly her advocacy for children and youth, as well as her humility and dedication in her leadership roles.
“Mateke’s humility, dedication, and passion were evident in everything she did. She always placed the needs of others before her own. Her exemplary leadership and selflessness were not just admirable, they were inspirational,” the Prime Minister added.
As tributes continue to pour in, Hon. Sarah Mateke Nyirabashitsi’s legacy as a compassionate leader, public servant, and advocate for vulnerable groups will remain a guiding light for many in the nation.
