Minister Orders Arrest of Moneylenders Seizing Land Illegally
Deputy Minister of Finance and National Planning in charge of Cooperatives, Hajji Haruna Kyeyune Kasolo, has instructed police and Resident District Commissioners (RDCs) to arrest moneylenders who are illegally seizing people’s land.
Speaking at the Oliver Tambo School of Leadership in Nakaseke district, Kasolo revealed the persistent issue of moneylenders exploiting vague contracts to claim properties, particularly land, from vulnerable individuals.
He emphasized that the government has introduced initiatives like the Parish Development Model to provide financial resources for rural development, making it unjustifiable for moneylenders to mislead people and take their land.
He also noted that all moneylender licenses expired in December 2023, reinforcing the focus on cooperatives, which provide loans at reasonable rates while promoting education and development.
The Minister’s remarks were made during a workshop organized by the Office of the Prime Minister, aimed at training over 400 local leaders from five districts.
These leaders, including RDCs, district chairpersons, councilors, and youth and women representatives, are receiving training in service delivery and economic and security skills.
The 11-day course covers subjects such as agriculture and finance and includes firearm use instruction to enhance the leaders’ capacity to serve their communities effectively.
