Court Sets Dates for Trial of MPs Mawanda, Wamakuyu, Akamba, and Co-Accused
November 2024 has been set aside for the trial of members of parliament and other officials accused of corruption.
MPs including Michael Mawanda, Ignatius Mudimi Wamakuyu, and Paul Akamba, attorney Kirya Taitankoko, and Principal Cooperative Officer Leonard Kavundira of the Ministry of Trade, Industry, and Cooperatives are among the accused who will be charged. Along with Ssali, whose trial dates have also been set, they are co-accused.
The judge has fixed the trial dates for November 4th, 11th, 12th, 13th, and 15th, 2024. To ensure a smooth trial process, the judge has ordered the prosecution, led by Mr. Edward Muhumuza, to complete the disclosure of evidence to the defense teams by September 10th.
This will allow the defense lawyers ample time to review the evidence before returning to court on October 23rd. On that date, both sides are expected to agree on the facts that are not in contention before the trial begins.
In addition to setting the trial dates, the court also addressed bail applications for some of the accused.
Bail hearings for MPs Mawanda, Akamba, and lawyer Kirya were held, while Ssali and Kavundira are set to apply for bail on August 28th. MP Wamakuyu’s bail application was heard on August 26th, with a ruling scheduled for August 28th at 2:30 pm.
As the trial dates approach, all eyes will be on the courtroom to see how this high-profile case unfolds, with significant political and legal implications at stake.
