FDC Katonga Faction Holds First Delegates Conference to Decide Future

It is anticipated that the Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) Katonga group will reveal the name of its new political party at its inaugural delegates meeting, taking place on August 19, 2024.

Several members of the break away faction have convened with delegates from several districts of Uganda to forge a way forward on whether to officially form another party or resolve matters with the Najjanankumbi faction.

It should be remembered that prior to this event, members led by the FDC founding member Dr. Kiiza Besigye and Natrional Party President Wasswa Birigwa resorted to a nationwide consultation from party members.

The consultative meetings were held in Busia, Wakiso, Rukungiri, Masindi, Hoima, Lira, Gulu, Mityana, Masaka, Kotido, Soroti, Amuria, Kitgum, West Nile, Ankole, Kigezi and Mbale districts among others.

Their final meeting, held at Luwero town’s Fatima Hall, discussed their future move  with leaders from Nakaseke, Nakasongola, and Luwero.

Recently, Kira Municipality Legislator Ibrahim Nganda Ssemujju stated that the faction would create its own political party because the proposition is supported by at least 80% of the national stakeholders surveyed.

He noted that a number of names have been suggested, but the delegates at the conferencewill decide on the ultimate choice.

The Katonga group suspended Patrick Amuriat, the party president, during an extraordinary delegates conference in September of last year. The party’s secretary general, Nathan Nandala Mafabi, and treasurer, Geoffrey Ekanya, were also suspended during the meeting.

Erias Lukwago was consequently appointed the interim president of the party.

The Katonga faction alleges that during the 2021 elections, the party received a donation of billions of shillings while keeping its source a secret. The funds were utilized to finance significant acquisitions, such as the Cooper Motors vehicles utilized in the general elections in 2021.

“The source of the money has not been satisfactorily disclosed by the party president and secretary general to their known supporters and new members. However, since the FDC is made up of numerous individuals, they must all be convinced that the funds did not originate from Museveni as is often assumed, Semujju stated  during a consultative meeting that was attended by more than 100 top party leaders from around the nation at Nsambya Sharing Hall.
