Two MPs, Deputy Mayor Released on Bail; Nine Others Remanded

Two members of Parliament and the other fourteen FDC members from the Katonga faction were brought before Buganda Road court on accusations of common nuisance.

The group, which included Kaija Harold, the Deputy Mayor of Kampala, Doreen Nyanjura, Ibrahim Ssemujju Nganda of Kira Municipality, Kamara Nicholas of Kabale Municipality, and other leaders, appeared before Chief Magistrate Ronald Kayizzi and refuted the allegations.

In preparation for an unauthorized march to the Kenyan High Commission offices in Kampala, the group is accused of becoming unruly and obstructing traffic. They want an explanation regarding the arrest of 36 of their members in Kisumu, Kenya, who were then brought back to Uganda by Kenyan authorities, accused of terrorism, and placed under remand to Luzira.

Kaija Harold, Mps. Kamara Nicholas, Nangozi Faridah, Semujju Nganda, and Deputy Mayor Njajura Doreen are among the five suspects who have been freed on a one million non-cash bail. The other nine members, however, have been remanded to Luzira prison until August 7, 2024, due to the fact that their sureties were deemed insufficient.

According to the prosecution, on August 6, 2024, the 14 suspects on Katonga Road in Kampala behaved raucously and impeded traffic, causing inconvenience to others and ultimately becoming a common nuisance.
