FDC Katonga Activists Fail to Petition Kenya HC Over 36 Colleagues

A number of activists attached to the Forum for Democratic Change(FDC), Katonga faction have been arrested for the protesting detention of 36 colleagues from Kisumu, Kenya.

The group including Kira Municipality Mp Ssemujju Nganda, Deputy Lord Mayor Doreen Nyanjura,  veteran politicians Ingrid Turinawe and Harlod Kaija among others were arrested on Monday while marching to the Kenyan High Commission office in Uganda, to deliver a protest note.

The group demands the release of the 36 colleagues on grounds that they were illegally arrested, deported and charged with terrorism.

The protesters held large placards with pictures of the accused and chanted for their release.

The 36 were arrested by external  operatives in Kisumu, Kenya and deported to Uganda.

The group was later remanded to jail by the Nakawa Chief Magistrate’s Court on terrorism charges.

They are accused of engaging in covert activities suspected to be subversive to Kenyan security forces.

Court heard that between 22nd and 23rd of July 2024, the 36 traveled to Kisumu, Kenya, to receive terrorism training.

However, the FDC Katonga leaders insist that their colleagues traveled for a leadership workshop and had received clearence from the Ugandan immigration and security.

They claim they were all camped at Ukweri Catholic Pastoral Centre, Kisumu, when they were arrested.

The FDC Katonga sect now says if their grievances are not handled and the accused unconditionally released in one week, they will run to the East African Court and seek assistance from the united nations for Justice.
