Kabaka Warns Clan Heads Against Undermining the Kingdom

The Kabaka of Buganda, Ronald Muwenda Mutebi, has issued a strong rebuke to the Battaka (Clan heads) who have been assuming authority over him and his premier, Katikiro Charles Peter Mayiga.

In a virtual address during the celebration of his 31st Coronation Day at St. Paul Cathedral, Namirembe, Kabaka Mutebi firmly stated that he is neither elected nor appointed by the clan heads, and they do not hold any authority over him or his appointees, such as the Katikiro of Buganda.

“While we have been abroad attending to our doctors and receiving medication and treatment, we have been closely monitoring events. We have consistently urged unity to safeguard and respect our culture, norms, and discipline, as any relaxation in observing them could allow the enemy to cause division.

The situation we have endured in recent months has led some people, whether unknowingly, knowingly, or deliberately, to despise and undermine our cultural norms and to misbehave.

They have misled the public about the happenings in the Buganda kingdom and the throne. This is very dangerous. You must be very conscious and extremely careful with these individuals.

For this reason, we want to remind our people that the Kabaka undergoes standard ritual procedures to be installed, and he is not elected, selected, or appointed by the clan heads. Only a few known clan heads perform specific rituals, and they are aware of their responsibilities.

Secondly, the Kabaka governs the Buganda kingdom with the assistance of his own appointed Katikiro and does not delegate his authority to anyone.

Thirdly, in our culture, the Kabaka has the liberty and authority to change known norms or introduce new ones according to generational trends,” said the tough-talking Kabaka.

Despite expressing gratitude to the youth and those in the diaspora for their love and obedience to the Kingdom, Kabaka Mutebi emphasized that it should be done with utmost discipline and respect, as it has been from inception.

During the same event, the Katikiro of Buganda, Charles Peter Mayiga, urged the people of Buganda to remain focused and united despite various challenges, including those attempting to divide and weaken the kingdom.

“It is very hard to defeat many people who are united. There may be challenges or disruptions caused by the enemies of Buganda, but they will never emerge victorious over the kingdom,” said the Katikiro.
