NUP MPs Granted Bail After Facing Charges of Unlawful Assembly
The National Unity Platform Party Members of Parliament, Francis Batebi Zaake, MP for Mityana Municipality; Katikamu south MP Hassan Kirumira; and Tebandeke Charles, MP for Baale County Kayunga district, have been granted bail after appearing before the Law Development Center magistrates court on Thursday, July 25, 2024.
Zaake has been on remand in Luzira Prison since Monday, July 22, 2024, after being arrested and charged with reckless driving and driving with an invalid driving permit. Kirumira and Tebandeke were charged with unlawful assembly, contrary to sections 61(1) and 62 of the Penal Code Act read against them.
The three MPs and other co-accused were granted bail after Law Development Centre magistrate Martins Kiirya called court back to session at 12:45 pm after rescinding his decision to have court back at 4:00 pm as communicated earlier while adjourning.
Zaake was asked to pay Ugx 200,000 in cash bail and non-cash Ugx 10 million, whereas the rest were asked to pay Ugx 100,000 in cash and non-cash Ugx 500,000.
The three members of parliament and the other co-accused are to return to court on August 26, 2024.
