Five Suspects Arrested for Broad Day Robbery of Indian National
Police in Kampala have arrested multiple suspects in connection with a violent broad day robbery robbery that occurred on Jinja Road last week.
According to police on July 15, 2024, in the afternoon, an Indian national was assaulted and robbed by a group of unidentified boda-boda riders near the Victoria University junction. The victim was surrounded by the assailants, who forcibly took his black bag containing 150,000 shillings, a laptop, and a mobile phone. The incident was captured by CCTV cameras and subsequently went viral on social media.
Luke Owoyesigyire, the Kampala Metropolitan Police Spokesperson has confirmed the arrests. He says the arrested suspects is Mubaraka Sulaiman, who confessed to carrying out the attack and provided details about the planning of the crime. Sulaiman also identified another suspect, Ibra Kisenyi as the ringleader.
Owoyesigyire notes that Kisenyi was seen in the video footage wearing a white t-shirt and physically confronting the victim, accompanied by his accomplices known only by their aliases: Toofa, Ian, and Simple.
Sulaiman further disclosed that after the robbery at Esso Corner, the same group proceeded to Sir Apollo Kaggwa Road, where they robbed a mobile money vendor of her bag containing an unspecified amount of cash.
The local community attempted to intervene, leading to a pursuit that extended to Kazo Angola. During this chase, one of the suspects suffered an accident and was subsequently killed by an enraged mob. The identity of the deceased has not yet been established, as Sulaiman did not recognize him.
Owoyesigyire further reveals that Kisenyi, Mubaraka, Simple, and Toofa had all been released from prison between March and July 2024. Kisenyi has been linked to various criminal activities, including incidents at Acacia Avenue, City Oil, Bugolobi Junction, Mawanda Road, and the recent robbery at Esso Corner.
