Head Teacher, PTA Members Charged for Illegally Charging UPE Pupils

In a collaborative effort, the Anti-Graft State House Unit, Uganda Police, and the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) have arrested and arraigned in court a teacher accused of abuse of office and corruption.

Herbert Musasizi, the head teacher of Kebisoni Integrated Primary School, and seven members of the PTA Executive Committee appeared  before the Magistrates Court in Rukungiri District on Tuesday.

The accused face charges of unlawfully levying fees on pupils enrolled under the Universal Primary Education (UPE) program and expelling those who failed to pay. This action came after numerous complaints from parents, who highlighted that UPE is supposed to be free for all students.

The case stems from the public outcry against the illegal fees and the subsequent denial of education to defaulting pupils, contradicting the principles of the UPE initiative. This incident depicts ongoing efforts by the government to expose and combat corruption within educational institutions.

The court proceedings will address the charges against Musasizi and the PTA members.
