Joint Security Forces Recover Two Submachine Guns in Karamoja
In a continued effort to curb cattle theft and disarm rustlers, joint security forces in Karamoja successfully recovered two submachine guns (SMG rifles) on Tuesday.
One rifle was voluntarily surrendered by Dowan Ameringiro from Lolachat in Nabilatuk District. The other rifle was forcibly recovered from NATO Limo in Tapac Sub-county, Moroto District.
The operations against cattle theft and the disarmament of rustlers are progressing smoothly, according to officials. The recovery of these weapons marks a significant step in enhancing the security and stability of the region.
At least 70 civilians lost their lives and 50 others were injured in the course of raids by Karamojong cattle rustlers in the year 2023.
By January 2024, Michael Longole, the Mt. Moroto Regional Police Spokesperson, noted that out of the 265 guns recovered, at least 106 guns and 1,206 rounds of ammunition were surrendered voluntarily during 42 engagement meetings with Karachunas across the sub-region.
