Kanungu Police Investigates Man’s Death in Violent Fight
The police in Kanungu District are investigating the circumstances surrounding the death of a 26-year-old man, Brian Tumwesigyire, a resident of Murehe “B” village in Kakyinga Parish, Bugongi Sub-county.
Kigezi Regional Police Spokesman Elly Maate informed journalists that it is alleged the deceased was struck in the head with a panga by Martin Kamugisha, a resident of the same village. Kamugisha claimed he acted out of provocation after Tumwesigyire and others hit him with a stone, causing severe bleeding. Kamugisha is currently admitted to Kambuga Hospital under police guard.
According to Maate, preliminary investigations suggest that Kamugisha was attacked on Friday evening while returning home. He was stoned from behind, and when he turned to see what was happening, he was hit on the right side of his nose, which caused him to bleed profusely. In response, he chased his assailants and struck Tumwesigyire in the head with a deep cut.
It is alleged that both parties initially agreed to treat their injuries independently. Kamugisha reported the assault to Bugongi Police Post, while Tumwesigyire went home and slept without informing his parents.
On the morning of Saturday, July 6, 2024, Tumwesigyire’s parents found him in his room and rushed him to Kambuga Hospital, where he died before receiving treatment.
The police were notified of his death, a postmortem examination was conducted, and Kamugisha was arrested at the hospital where he remains under police guard. Investigations are ongoing, and the case has been registered at Kanungu District Central Police Station under reference number CRB/438/2024 to aid in the investigation.
