Cameroon’s First Daughter Faces Mixed Reactions Over Same-Sex Kiss Instagram Post
Brenda Biya, the 26-year-old daughter of Cameroon’s President Paul Biya, has ignited a heated debate after sharing an image on Instagram in which she kisses Brazilian model Layyons Valença.
In the caption, she wrote, “I’m crazy about you & I want the world to know,” followed by a heart emoji.
The post comes from a country where same-sex relationships are illegal and punishable by up to five years in prison.
President Biya, 91, has ruled Cameroon since 1982, making him one of Africa’s longest-serving leaders.
Brenda Biya, a musician who goes by the name King Nasty and resides abroad, did not explicitly declare her sexuality in the post. However, she later shared an article from Le Monde, which reported that she had “come out.” She also reposted supportive messages from various followers.
This bold move has drawn both praise and condemnation.
While some Cameroonians have shown support for Biya, many have responded with homophobic comments, reflecting the country’s conservative stance on LGBTQ+ issues. Questions have also arisen about whether her public declaration is a privilege that only the wealthy and well-connected can afford.
Human rights groups, including Human Rights Watch, have previously criticized Cameroon’s stringent anti-LGBT laws, urging the government to ensure the protection of all citizens, regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity.
Neither the Cameroonian government nor President Biya has commented on the matter.
