Germany Secure Knockout Spot with Win Over Hungary

Germany continued their impressive start to Euro 2024, securing a 2-0 victory over Hungary to become the first team to advance to the knockout stages. Bayern Munich’s Jamal Musiala was the standout performer, scoring the opener and receiving a standing ovation upon his late substitution.

Midway through the first half, Musiala fired into the roof of the net after a contentious build-up involving Ilkay Gundogan and Hungary’s Willi Orban. Despite Hungarian protests for a foul, a VAR check upheld the goal.

Hungary’s Roland Sallai thought he had leveled the score just before half-time, but his rebound header was ruled out for offside.

Early in the second half, former Manchester City star Gundogan extended Germany’s lead, slotting home after being left unmarked in the box.

Hungary posed a challenge with Liverpool’s Dominik Szoboszlai threatening on set-pieces. His curling effort required a save from Germany’s Manuel Neuer, and another attempt was blocked by Jonathan Tah

Germany displayed patches of creativity and control, building on their dominant 5-1 victory over Scotland. Their solid performance earned them six points from two games, guaranteeing a spot in the last 16. A draw against Switzerland on Sunday will see them finish as Group A winners.

Hungary suffered a second consecutive defeat, leaving them in a precarious position. They must defeat Scotland in their next match to have any chance of progressing.

Hungary’s head coach Marco Rossi expressed his frustration with the officiating, suggesting the referee showed double standards. “Germany would have won anyways because they were better than us, but the referee was the worst on the pitch,” Rossi commented.

Germany now looks ahead to their final group stage match against Switzerland, while Hungary aims to revive their campaign against Scotland.
