Youths March in Kampala Protest US Sanctions Against Speaker Among

A section of youths took to the streets of Kampala today, protesting the recent US sanctions imposed on Uganda’s Speaker of Parliament, Rt Hon. Anita Among.

The demonstrators, holding placards and chanting “Free Anita Among,” expressed their discontent with the US government’s decision to impose visa restrictions on the Speaker and her spouse, among other government officials. The group who expressed dissatifaction with the move argue that the Speaker has done nothing but fight for the rights of voiceless ugandans using her influence in parliament.

The United States on May 30 announced sanctions against Speaker Among, her husband and FUFA president Moses Magogo, former Deputy Chief of the Defense Forces of the UPDF, who is currently a senior presidential advisor Lt Gen. Peter Elwelu , former Karamoja Minister Mary Gorretti Kitutu and spouse Micheal Kitutu among others, over allegations of significant corruption and gross human rights abuses.

The sanctions, announced by the U.S. State Department, bar the individuals from entering the United States.

Among, faces accusations tied to her leadership of Uganda’s national assembly. The UK also sanctioned Among last month, citing corruption concerns.

Among is also currently under a presidentially ordered probe investigating undeclared property in the UK. Despite the allegations, she denies any wrongdoing, claiming she is a victim of a political witch hunt, targeted for her role in enacting the controversial anti-gay bill.
