The Government of Uganda has entered into a contract with the Turkish company M/S SUMMA to build a state-of-the-art, multi-purpose stadium in Hoima.
The facility, designed to seat 20,000 spectators, is being constructed in preparation for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), which Uganda is set to co-host.
The official contract signing took place, at State House Nakasero. The event was presided over by First Lady and Minister of Education and Sports, Janet Museveni. Representing the Government of Uganda and the National Council of Sports was Dr. Bernard Patrick Ogwel, while Selim Bora signed on behalf of M/S SUMMA. The legal formalities were overseen by John Bosco Suza, Director of Legal Advisory Services, who represented the Attorney General’s office.
Prior to the contract signing, there was a ceremonial handover of the land title for the stadium. Minister of Lands, Housing, and Urban Development Judith Nabakooba presented the 34.9-acre land title for Hoima City Stadium to Mrs. Janet Museveni. This land, located in Hoima City, is now set to become the site of Uganda’s latest and most modern sports facility.
The project is a part of Uganda’s broader strategy to bolster its sports infrastructure and promote sports tourism. The stadium will not only serve as a venue for football matches but is also designed to accommodate various other sports and events, thereby enhancing its utility and value to the community.
In her remarks at the signing ceremony, Mrs. Janet Museveni expressed her optimism about the project. She highlighted the importance of such infrastructure in nurturing young talent and providing a platform for local athletes to compete on an international stage. She also emphasized the potential economic benefits, including job creation and increased tourism.
Dr. Bernard Patrick Ogwel, speaking on behalf of the National Council of Sports, reiterated the government’s commitment to developing sports in Uganda. He pointed out that the new stadium would be a critical asset in the country’s preparations for hosting AFCON 2027 and would leave a lasting legacy for future generations.
Selim Bora of M/S SUMMA expressed his company’s enthusiasm for the project, assuring that the stadium would meet international standards. He noted that M/S SUMMA’s extensive experience in constructing sports facilities worldwide would ensure the successful and timely completion of the Hoima City Stadium.
The 2027 AFCON is expected to be a milestone event for Uganda, and the new stadium in Hoima is poised to play a central role. This project underscores the government’s dedication to enhancing sports infrastructure and its vision of transforming Uganda into a hub for major sporting events.
With the contract now signed, construction is set to commence shortly. The stadium is anticipated to be completed well ahead of the 2027 AFCON, ensuring ample time for testing and preparation. This new development is not only a significant step forward for Ugandan sports but also a beacon of the country’s growing prominence on the African sporting stage.
