Betty Nambooze, the Member of Parliament for Mukono Municipality, has signed the censure motion.
She clarified that her actions are not intended to condemn the four commissioners but to provide them with a platform to defend themselves.
Nambooze made these remarks on June 7, 2024, at Parliament while signing the censure motion.
“By signing this document, I am not condemning anybody, but I am giving the stakeholders an opportunity to be heard. I think this is the best process for us to adopt at the moment,” Nambooze stated.
According to Nambooze, she needed to consult her constituents and conduct research before signing the motion because, at the time the money was distributed among the commissioners, she was abroad seeking medical care.
She emphasized that as a Member of Parliament, her signature is no longer her personal property but belongs to the people of Mukono.
The MP further explained that when MPs wanted to debate the matter on the floor of parliament, the Speaker was reluctant to allow the debate to proceed.
“So this is the only way to bring them together to hear those who are for and those who are against the matter,” Nambooze said.
On June 6, 2024, supporters of the National Unity Platform Party from the Greater Mukono Region urged all opposition members of Parliament, especially those from the NUP, to sign the motion.
