Government Releases 3billion shillings for Civilian Veterans
As Uganda prepares to celebrate the 35th Heroes’ Day on June 9, 2024, and honor 53 individuals for their extraordinary contributions, the Office of the Prime Minister has released payments amounting to 3 billion shillings for civilian beneficiaries.
Addressing the media at the Uganda Media Centre in Kampala, the Minister of State for Luweero Triangle, Alice Kaboyo, advised beneficiaries to use the money wisely to eradicate poverty.
“The released Akasiimo funds will pay 1,269 beneficiaries cleared by the veterans’ verification committee under the 51st schedule from the districts of Luwero, Nakasongola, and Nakaseke,” said Alice Kaboyo.
She noted that since the Akasiimo program began in 2008, the government has verified and paid 87,269 beneficiaries in recognition of their support during the liberation struggle from 1981 to 1986.
“The veterans’ verification committee will continue to verify civilians who have not yet been considered, and my office will ensure that allocated funds for Akasiimo are paid to the right beneficiaries,” Kaboyo stressed.
Akasiimo is not a measure of one’s contribution but a token of appreciation. I therefore wish to thank His Excellency, the President of Uganda, who wisely established the Akasiimo program in 2008.
Kaboyo explained that the list of 1,269 Akasiimo beneficiaries, including their names, national identification numbers, amounts received, sub-county, and districts, will be displayed on the notice boards of the respective beneficiary districts and the Luwero regional office for ease of reference.
Uganda will celebrate Heroes’ Day under the resonant theme “Hail Our Legends: A Secure Uganda Is Now a Reality.” This year’s ceremony promises to be a poignant reflection on Uganda’s journey towards peace and prosperity.
Highlighting the significance of the event, Minister Kaboyo, emphasized, “This is a historical day on which we reflect on the contributions of our heroes and heroines to the political and socio-economic transformation of Uganda.” Indeed, the occasion serves as a solemn reminder of the sacrifices made by countless individuals to secure Uganda’s future.
