Stranded Pilgrims at Namugongo Martyrs Shrine Seek Transport

A section of Christians who trekked to Namugongo to celebrate the prestigious Martyrs Day festivities are now stranded at the shrines with no transport or hope of returning home.

Thousands of pilgrims, some of whom walked long distances, gathered at the Namugongo Martyrs Shrine for the auspicious celebrations that concluded yesterday.

However, according to Rev. Fr. Vincent Lubega, the rector at the shrine, the stranded pilgrims fall into two categories: those who do not have transport fares to return home, and those who are mentally unstable and cannot recall where they came from. He noted that bothcategories have no money on them.

He did not specify the exact number of stranded pilgrims but said that most of them are Catholics who belong to various dioceses and parishes.

Rev. Fr. Lubega stated, “We are trying to see how best we can help them. We have organized a meeting with a team near the church to talk to the concerned pilgrims one by one to find a way forward.”

“Nebbi Diocese, the organizers of this year’s event, will team up with the shrine and the Episcopal Conference to ensure that everyone returns home safely. It is my duty and my team’s duty here to ensure they return safely,” said Rev. Fr. Lubega.

He clarified that efforts are underway to address the situation and provide the necessary support to the stranded pilgrims.
