Traffic Directorate Calls For Road Safety as Schools Re-Open

The Directorate of Traffic and Road Safety has urged all road users to prioritize road safety as schools re-open for the second term.

Michael Kananura the traffic’s spokesman has called for collective responsibility on the road as there will be increased road activity expected from Monday as learners, teachers, and parents travel to and from schools.

Kananura noted the critical role of parents, teachers, and caretakers in ensuring the safety of children. He urged them to adhere strictly to the road safety tips issued by the Directorate.

Kananura advised all motorists to observe traffic rules diligently, exercise maximum discipline, and maintain patience to minimize congestion. He stressed the importance of avoiding distractions, such as using phones while driving, walking, or crossing roads, to stay alert and prevent accidents.

For young children, particularly those under 12 years old, Kananura called for adult supervision when riding motorcycles. He warned against motorcycles carrying more than two children and emphasized the need for riders and children to always wear helmets.

He also advised parents or guardians to escort children to guarantee their safety on the road.

Meanwhile, drivers were strongly warned against carrying excess passengers or loads, as this contravenes traffic laws and increases the risk of crashes.

Additionally, children are advised to use taxis and boda-bodas from recognized stages and to choose vehicles with checkered bands to avoid conmen and kidnappers. They should avoid boarding tinted or unfamiliar vehicles and note the registration number before getting on board.

Kananura encouraged the public to contact the Directorate via the toll-free number 0800199099 for any road safety concerns,

Let’s prioritize road safety and protect our children as they embark on their educational journeys this
