The Uganda National Examinations Board (UNEB) has announced that the registration process for the 2024 examination cycle, will feature four key examinations.
Among them include: the Primary Leaving Examination (PLE), the Uganda Certificate of Education (UCE) for both the Old and New Curricula, and the Uganda Advanced Certificate of Education (UACE).
According to Executive Director Dan Odongo, this year marks a milestone as the board prepares to conduct the UCE examination based on the New Lower Secondary Curriculum (NLSC) for the first time and also marks the last time for candidates wishing to sit examinations under the old ciriculum.
Odongo explained the criteria for candidates aspiring to sit for the UCE examination under the NLSC noting that only candidates who have attained passing grades (1, 2, 3, and 4) in the PLE or its equivalent and have completed four years of Ordinary Level Education are eligible for registration.
Candidates are required to register for a minimum of eight (8) and a maximum of nine (9) subjects. Notably, Continuous Assessment (CA) scores for the subjects undertaken, along with Project scores, will be obligatory for certification with the former taking 20 percent.
He mentioned that the verification of PLE grades will be automated through the e-registration software, provided candidates have sat the PLE within specified periods outlined in registration circulars distributed to schools.
Odongo called on schools to ensure they submit CA’s and project scores to the examination body between June 04 and October 04 without fail.
“Continious assesment is an integral part of the NLSC and scores will contribute 20 percent to the End of Cycle assesment.Scores for projects will be reported seperately on certificates. Any candidate without CA’s or project scores will not be graded,” he noted
He further indicated that UNEB is currently training teachers in competence based and continous assesment skills as well as data collection using Assesment Management Information Sytem (ATMIS), accross all regions to ensure proper results.
Of particular importance is Odongo’s revelation that this will be the final administration of the UCE Transitional Examination under the Old Curriculum, UCE-TE. He urged eligible candidates to seize this opportunity and register, emphasizing that UNEB will not conduct UCE Exams under the old curriculum in the subsequent years.
“There is need to conduct a transitional exam based on the old cirriculum to give oppotunity to categories like those who sat in 2023 and want to improve grades, those that registered but didnt sit, those who were cancelled in 2023m and others who failed to register but sat PLE in 2018 and earlier years, among others” noted Odongo
Odongo announced that the end of registration for exams at all levels officially will be May 31, 2024, except candidates who delay will be slapped with late registration fees. However, the government will cater for registration of all candidates in Universal Primary Education (UPE), Universal Secondary Education (USE), and Universal Post ‘O’ level Education (UPOLET).
