Seven Dead After Car Plunges Into River Namatala in Budaka District

Tragedy struck early this morning when a car carrying eight people lost control and plunged into River Namatala, on the border between Budaka and Butaleja Districts, resulting in the deaths of seven individuals.

The victims, all from the same family, were returning from a traditional introduction marriage in Mpigi District and heading to Butaleja District.

The Bukedi North Regional Police spokesperson, Samuel Semewo, confirmed the incident. “The vehicle had eight occupants, and only the driver survived the crash,” he stated.

One of the victim’s relatives, Majidu Mukeya, recounted receiving a distress call from his son, who informed him that the car had lost control and crashed into the river. Community members quickly mobilized and rushed to the river, some even jumping into the water in an effort to locate the submerged car, which took longer than expected to find.

Locals reported that the accident occurred around 4 am in a place called Kaiti. Eyewitnesses noted that the car was moving at a slow pace, but the driver was tired and had earlier suggested stopping to rest.

The identities of the deceased have not yet been released. Police retrieved the bodies and removed the car from the river. The bodies have been taken to Budaka Hospital mortuary for postmortem examinations.
