State House Denies Alleged Critique of Parliamentary Awards in Circulating Letter

The Presidential Press Unit (PPU) wishes to inform the General Public that the letter circulating on social media, purportedly authored by President Museveni regarding service awards to Parliamentary Commissioners, is forged and should be disregarded.

The letter, which has been circulating on social media, alleges that the president directed the Attorney General to investigate the legality of the awards and makes derogatory remarks about Speaker Anita Among, putting her back in a difficult position.

Quoting President Museveni, the letter claims that the “service award” given by Speaker Anita Among and the Parliamentary Commission to former Leader of the Opposition Mathias Mpuuga and Backbench Commissioners is deemed as “primitive accumulation of wealth.”

Just a year into office, on March 6, 2022, the Parliamentary Commission reportedly granted Mr. Mpuuga Shs500 million, along with a bodyguard, while former backbench commissioners each received Shs400 million.

These awards were granted on a personal basis, meaning the benefits were specifically for the four officials and not their respective offices.
